Quantum sails

Philosophy - a delicate balance between art and technology

The Quantum Sail Design Group’s success is all about people. It is a direct function of the staff’s talent and experience. While the staff includes world class sailors, the emphasis has been on attracting the world’s best sailmakers. Ultimately, the success of our client’s projects is based on the intimate, hands-on participation of a knowledgeable, experienced, sailmaker. As important as the technology is, it is the people that make that technology work.

True to the founder’s original principles, Quantum knows only one way to build a sail. Racing, Cruising, or anywhere in between, the design criteria might change, but the approach is the same. Every sail is the best that can be built. No expense is spared, no stone left un-turned. There is no tiered product line, no exceptions. Success is based on an unmatched level of attention to detail. Every client and every boat is treated as if they were part of an America’s Cup project. The approach is straightforward; nothing short of perfection is acceptable. Just build the best sails.

Customization

The correct sail for a specific application on a given boat is unique. There are no cookie cutter solutions. Sails will never be a simple commodity. The very nature of the beast and the process of creation require a significant level of customization. Quantum specializes in unique engineering solutions. Each sail is tailored to the demands of the job and the needs of the client.

Competition

The Group is committed to competition. It has participated successfully in the most competitive arenas in the sport. Continued participation in these events is essential to the development of a superior product, allowing us to test new techniques and materials in situations that would otherwise not be available or affordable.

Technology

While remaining true to our roots as craftsman and artisans, The Group is founded on an equal commitment to technology. Better tools and more precise techniques are essential to the creation of the world’s best sails. The sailmakers of The Quantum Sail Design Group have been part of the development of almost every important advance in the industry in the last twenty years. Including big picture technology like three-dimensional sail design software, laser cutting techniques, finite element modeling, wind tunnel testing, and materials development (Cuben Fibre, PBO, Pentex, FUSION), to nuts and bolts details like the most elegant batten pocket system, the Group has been constantly in the forefront. The Group has cultivated links to industrial and academic partners throughout the world to further our efforts. The ultimate product of these efforts, Quantum’s proprietary Fusion M process for the manufacture of membrane sails, is the most technically sophisticated approach in the industry, and produces the finest sails built anywhere in the world today.
